One of the things I said I wanted to do during my sabbatical was to help a non-profit. I’ve decided to up my commitment to The Ferguson Road Initiative (FRI), and am taking the lead on building their first-ever branding and marketing plan.
While you can learn more about the organization on their website, the gist of the challenge we’re tackling is this: FRI has largely been funded for nearly a decade by a Federal program that is going away. So, it’s working to become self-sustaining. They have a number of good efforts going to make up that funding, but we’ve identified a gap in awareness, both in the community directly served and by the surrounding communities who also benefit greatly from FRI efforts.
I’m putting together a plan to change that, and it may be a core test of something big.
I need some help working through this, including some legwork talking to people and businesses in the far East Dallas community. I’m looking for an associate to help me get things rolling.
Ideally, I’m looking for a student who wants some serious ground-level experience in building a brand. There is no cash pay (unless you also want to sell ads on commission for the FRI newsletter). I’d prefer someone who can get class credit for the work, as I believe that concrete compensation, even in terms of a grade, makes anyone more accountable, Failing that, you should at least have a passion for crime reduction and economic development — even better if you live in an effected neighborhood.
Regardless, you will get great experience, a chance to do the work of a much more senior marketer, and recommendation from me and the organization as you move forward in your career. And, if you do amazing work, I’ll likely want to work with you again.
You should be organized, be able to write, shoot YouTube-level video and know your way around digital media well enough to post to a blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
If you’re interested, contact me ASAP. We have some market research to conduct in the next ten days.
